Wesley Urban Ministries is a United Church initiative that started in downtown Hamilton. It has more recently spread throughout the city, with satellites in other areas of the city. Our Outreach team co-ordinates a small group to prepare and serve a hot meal at the Wesley Centre on Ferguson Avenue North each July. This meal is entirely sponsored by the congregation of Stoney Creek United Church.
Our Children, Youth and Teens are also avid supporters of Wesley Urban Ministries, and contribute thousands of dollars towards the "Case for Kids" fundraising walk, held every June at the Bayfront Park in Hamilton. For more information on other Outreach projects done by our young folks, click here.
The Soup-Line project was initiated by past Outreach Chair Kay Dol in the early 1990's to raise money for the Outreach Committee and their work. Initially, the programme served soup to the congregation on the last Sunday of November, January, February and March, and was fashioned after the soup lines of the great depression. There was one big difference, however. We offer gourmet soup and dessert for a minimal cost for church families to join us. It also served as an opportunity for families to gather in friendship and fellowship.
Soup Line continues to be a success and seems to be popular with the congregation. There is a lot of work and effort to support Soup Line, not only by the Outreach Committee members but from the volunteers within our church. Many thanks to committee member Janet Cumming for taking on this project for the last several years. This year, Soup line will be held on January 29 and February 28, 2012. You will be able to chose from no less than 10 gourmet soups and 10 fantastic desserts for less than $5 per person.
The proceeds from this fundraiser supports the World Vision children sponsored by the Outreach Committee. Please contact the church office for more information on this event.
Donations to Zimbabwe
The members of SCUC have provided overwhelming support in raising a consignment of donations for the needy in Zimbabwe. A 20 foot container left the port of Montreal, bound for South Africa on Sept 3rd, and will arrive in Harare, Zimbabwe. The consignment included 800 theological books, some salvaged from our Church library, for the United Theological College in Harare; 300 English literature books for children and youth libraries; and about 4000kg of mixed clothing, toys, and varied kitchen utensils. Of particular interest are the old choir gowns and hoods from our own choir. Many thanks to the generous choir members.
A very big thank you to Rev. Bob for his support, encouragement and physical strength expended in the off-load of vehicles with donations at our apartment. Behind this project is Joan Powell of Caledonia, whose relentless efforts saw us collect an additional assortment of goods of about 8000kg.
May our living and loving God bless you all.
